You never know when your community will be next. If this happens to you, you may not have direct access to water, food or electricity for quite a while. It would be best to keep survival backpacks at home, school, office or even in your car. These backpacks will serve as your emergency kits and they should contain essential items to help you get through this disaster.

When packing your emergency supply kit, here are the things you need to include:

Food and Water
You should have at least one gallon of water per person per day. In packing, you should pack for at least a few days’ worth of water just to be sure. You should also have food that is easy to make and doesn’t easily spoiled. Canned goods are your best friend when it comes to these situations. There are now easy to open canned goods so you no longer need a knife to open them. But just in case, having something to open these is important as well such as a can opener or a pocket knife. Remember to check the expiry dates of the foods regularly and replace them when needed.

Electronics

You should expect electricity to be down for at least a few days so it is imperative that you have a flashlight ready at all times. Have ones that are battery operated, solar-powered or hand crank. For battery operated flashlights, make sure that you have a couple of extra batteries on hand as well. There are flashlights that have radios built-in, so if you can get your hands on these, the better.

Cell phones are considered a must, so you can direct contact your loved ones or the authorities for help. Always have extra chargers, power banks and batteries on hand. If you can, you should have an extra phone that has a long battery life. It does not need to be fancy, it just needs to do the job of calling and texting other people.

Safety Supplies
You should never forget to have a first aid kit in your pack. Have a week’s worth of medicine for common illnesses, bandages, disinfectants and appropriate paperwork for any serious allergies or medical conditions of family members. Personal hygiene items should also be included like soap, toothpaste and toothbrush.

Other Items
Always have cash on hand, multipurpose tools, maps, extra sets of keys for your car and house, baby supplies and pet supplies (if applicable). It is also important to keep these fresh and ready to use at a moment’s notice.

Once you have all the items gathered, put them in an easy to carry container. You should also label the containers clearly to make them easy to find. You should also store your survival backpacks in places where you can quickly reach them. In any disaster, you will need to grab these kits fast so location is quite important.
